Paintings and models
This painting was done by English painter John (Jack) Spurling, in 1927, based on documents held about the ship at Lloyd's, plus other archive sources.
A remarkably similar painting by Efren S. Erese. To view or purchase copies of this or other paintings by Efren S. Erese go to the links page. Erese has taken his inspiration for the painting from John Spurling's painting.
I think this painting/lithograth was by John Goldsworthy Dutton, in 1872. It was commissioned to commemorate the speedy return of the ship from Macao in 96 days.
A special thank you to Mr. Norman Court who sent me this photo of the ship, painted by Henry Scott Nuke.
These two photographs of the models held at Barings London branch were sent to me by Dave Parham, and are reproduced here with his permission.
This photograph was sent to me by Peter Wilson, grandson of the clippers most famous captain, Andrew Shewan Jnr.Andrew wrote of his time at sea in "The Great Days of Sail" - Reminiscences of a Tea-Clipper Captain. This is a very worthwhile read, capturing the spirit of the heyday of the clipper ship, and giving an insight into life on these ships. It is also a snapshot of life around the 1860's and 70's. I will be extracting some of these memories, and creating a separate page for them.
